Task review and dependencies

When to use

Use review when “done” must be checked by someone else before it counts. Use dependencies when one task cannot start or finish before another, so a delay in one is visible to the rest of the chain.

Before you start

  • Submitting and withdrawing a review needs tasks:write. Approving or requesting changes needs tasks:approve.
  • The review workflow works only with tasks.advanced_management on (off by default for existing companies, on for new ones).
  • tasks.review_self_approval_allowed (off): lets the assignee approve their own task.
  • tasks.review_restricted_to_reviewer (off): only the named reviewer may approve.
  • tasks.review_feeds_performance (off by default, on for new companies): review scores flow into KPI data.
  • tasks.review_criteria: the scoring criteria your company sets, each on a 1 to 5 scale. The defaults are Quality 35, Volume 25, Timeliness 25, Effort 15.
  • Dependencies: tasks.dependency_start_policy (default warn), tasks.dependency_cross_project_allowed (off), tasks.auto_reschedule_dependents (default ask).

Steps

Submit for review

When the work is ready, open the task and submit it for review. You can withdraw the submission if you find a mistake.

Review the result

A reviewer with tasks:approve approves the task or requests changes. The review history stays on the task.

Add a dependency

In the task’s dependencies section, link the task to the one it depends on. Circular links are rejected.

Reschedule dependent tasks

When you change dates, the system can propose new dates for tasks that depend on this one. Preview the proposal, then apply it. Durations are kept and tasks are not pulled earlier.

If your company uses OKRs, link the task to a key result from the task page so everyday work connects to goals.

Tips & common mistakes

  • If the review option is missing, advanced task management is probably off.
  • A task blocked by an open dependency may warn or block you from starting, depending on the start policy.
  • Keep the review criteria few and clear, since reviewers score each one.
  • Only turn on feeding reviews into performance when everyone knows how scores are used.
